How I Made $750 From A Single Reddit Post And How You Can Too!

Spread the love

Firstly, the title is not clickbait. What you’re about to read is a 100% true story that is partially why I created this website in the first place. Truth is, you can make money through referrals, a lot of it as I found out. So without further ado, here’s the story of how Reddit unknowingly made me $750.

One day I was bored at home, a student with not a lot of savings, but a thirst for wanting more cash. I started to look into what I could possibly invest my <$1000 of savings in to create any type of worthwhile return and the options look slim. Until I came across an app called Raiz. Raiz is an Australian app that allows you to micro invest your money along with thousands of other people, with low fees and high returns.

The thing about Raiz though (and any business for that matter), is the more people that use it, the more profit they’ll make. So they use their best marketers, us, the users, to spread the word. They incentivize you signing up ‘people you know’ by investing $5 into your account on a successful sign up using your personalized code or link. Here’s where the fun began.

Without thinking too much about it, I wanted to see if I could make $5 out of my link by posting it online. After finding nowhere decent to post it I stopped, then a few days later, I was looking for an answer to a question related to Raiz, when I stumbled upon gold.

It had never crossed my mind, but the perfect platform was already set up to get my link out to people. That is, Reddit, the self-proclaimed front page of the internet.

So What Did I Do?

I found a popular subreddit that allowed the post of referral links as long as they weren’t spammy, then posted a very short review on what Raiz was, how it could help the reader and what using my code is offering them.

Reddit post

That’s all I wrote. I predict that post has made almost all the referral money I’ve earnt for Raiz, one other post is out there somewhere but it was a real low effort post on a low traffic subreddit.

Once the referrals started to add up, I got a little concerned, I didn’t even know if I was allowed to post my link publicly, so I went to the terms and conditions. Fortunately, this was one of the only apps I could’ve potentially promoted that I was actually allowed to publicly as per their fine print.

After posting, a few comments followed of people similarly trying to get their link out there, but the seed had been sown. Now, anyone searching for a Raiz referral code, would see my referral code. At first, it didn’t take off that much, then after a few weeks the results started to really show.

After 6 months, I’ve made a total of $750 from that single post. I want to make it clear that absolutely no maintenance has gone into this at all. Still don’t believe me?

How Can You Do The Same?

Referrals Are A Gold Mine

A lot of companies will happily reward you for doing their marketing dirty work, in fact you might already be a member of some apps or websites that have referral programs

Choose your site or app

This is going to be the most important step in determining just how much you will make. It’s easy to see how much a site is offering, but there’s a bit more to it than that. You have to be careful of hidden terms and conditions like these:

  • Limited to a certain amount of people (usually 5).
  • You must be an active member in order to claim. This usually will mean engaging in some form of activity at least once a month.
  • You cannot post publicly. Quite a few companies are quite strict on this and will actively search for any of their codes online. It’s a sure-fire way to get your account banned.
  • Some companies have a withdrawal limit per month. For example, survey company PureProfile pays $2 per referral and doesn’t set a limit on the amount you can make, however they do limit your monthly withdrawal to $50.

On top of all this is another issue, the more people that have already published their codes, the harder it will be to get yours a lot of exposure. In saying that though, there are ways to beat them…

The Place

The place you post will determine how much traffic will possibly see your post. So we want to be targeting a forum or subreddit that is quite popular. Next, you’re going to have to read the rules and make sure referral links are ok to post in there; if it says ‘no spam’, don’t worry about that, it’s not spam if you’re offering something other than a link to the reader.

The best places to post stuff like this is usually places like the subreddit r/beermoney. I’m not saying this is the only one, but it’s a great example of everything we need. It’s a place where a lot of people go to make easy money online, but isn’t revolved around one specific thing.

Let me give you an example to prove why it’s the best. If I’m trying to get my Raiz referral link seen by people, I could post it in the Raiz subreddit right? It seems like the logical choice, but everyone there likely already has it, so there’s no money to be made off them. Introducing it to people who might have never heard of it though, who are keen to make money, that’s where the money lies.

I’d suggest choosing 5 different places to post. Don’t get lazy though, vary the type of subreddit or forum, or even vary the site. Also don’t forget to check the rules, a banned account will kill all your progress, not just that posts’.

The Post

If you had a look before hand what other people were posting, you would’ve noticed the vast majority of them are low effort posts that look something like this:

Bad example

People just don’t click on these, period. They offer nothing and aren’t trustworthy, so why would you?

We’re going to learn from this and create the opposite. What we want to post is a comprehensive, yet succinct piece of information, then work the referral code in at the end. What I mean by that is something that covers off a question that people might have about it in all the detail they need, in the shortest amount of words possible.

You could follow my lead and give them a short sharp review or answer an individual question people have been asking. Commenting on peoples questions is another great way to get those sweet referrals.

If you want to take it one step further, write a comparison post with up to 10 different companies and try and add as many referral links as possible.

To keep it simple, you need to be writing content that is irresistible and catchy to the reader. Remember, a rubbish post may have 1,000 people a month see it, but only 1 will click through, but a good post with the same traffic might have hundreds of people stop to read it.
